Why Gut Health Matters,

Especially When We Are Talking About Hair and Scalp Health

Over the last few years, gut health has become one of the biggest conversations in the wellness world.

And honestly, for good reason...

Your gut is not just the place your food goes after you eat. It is home to trillions of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, viruses, and other tiny little residents that are very busy in there. Tiny, but apparently running the place. The microbiome helps support digestion, immune function, nutrient absorption, metabolism, inflammation balance, and overall wellness. The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences describes the microbiome as the collection of microbes and their genes that live on and inside the body, helping protect us from pathogens, support immune development, and help us digest food for energy.

So when we talk about gut health, we are not just talking about bloating or whether your stomach feels “off” after dinner. We are talking about a major foundation of whole-body health.

And yes, that includes your hair and scalp.

Why Is Everyone Talking About Gut Health?

It can feel like gut health suddenly became the popular kid at the wellness lunch table.

But the reason it is getting so much attention is because we are learning how connected the gut is to so many different systems in the body. Your gut microbiome plays a role in how you digest food, how you absorb nutrients, how your immune system responds, how inflammation is regulated, and how your body communicates internally.

When the gut is balanced, the body has a better chance of functioning well. When the gut is imbalanced, things can start to feel a little chaotic.

And sometimes that chaos does not stay in the gut. For some people, gut imbalance may look like bloating, gas, constipation, diarrhea, reflux, or food sensitivities.

For others, it may show up as fatigue, skin changes, inflammation, immune challenges, nutrient deficiencies, or hair and scalp concerns.

Because of course the body could not just send us a polite email saying, “Hey, your gut needs some attention.” No, it often shows up in confusing symptoms instead. Very rude.

The Gut-Hair Connection

Hair loss is rarely about one single thing.

Genetics can play a role. Hormones can play a role. Stress, illness, medications, thyroid function, mineral deficiencies, inflammation, and scalp health can all play a role too.

But underneath many of these factors, the gut often becomes part of the bigger conversation.

Why?

Because your hair follicles depend on nutrients, circulation, immune balance, and a healthy internal environment. Hair is not essential for survival, even though emotionally it absolutely feels essential. So when the body is under stress or not getting what it needs, hair can be one of the first things affected.

If the gut is not breaking down food well, absorbing nutrients efficiently, or maintaining a balanced microbial environment, the body may struggle to access the nutrients needed to support healthy hair growth.

Key nutrients for hair, including iron, zinc, B vitamins, vitamin D, protein, and essential fatty acids, all rely on proper digestion and absorption. You can eat the most beautiful, nutrient-dense diet in the world, but if your body is not digesting and absorbing well, you may not be getting the full benefit.

Annoying? Yes.

Important? Also yes.

The gut also plays a role in immune regulation and inflammation. This matters because many scalp concerns have an inflammatory component. When the body is dealing with internal stress, poor nutrient absorption, gut imbalance, or inflammation, the scalp may become one of the places where that imbalance shows up.

For some people, this may look like increased shedding. For others, it may show up as scalp tenderness, itching, flaking, oiliness, dryness, irritation, or slower hair growth.

This does not mean every hair loss case is “just gut health.” That would be far too simple, and the body loves to keep us humble. But gut health can be a very important piece of the puzzle, especially when someone is dealing with chronic hair loss, ongoing shedding, scalp inflammation, or symptoms that seem to keep coming back.

This is why I often say the hair and scalp can act like a check engine light for the body. They can give us clues that something deeper may need attention.

And when we are trying to understand what is happening with the hair and scalp, we have to look beyond the surface.

Why I Am Expanding More Deeply Into Gut Health

As a Board Certified Trichologist and Functional Nutrition Consultant, my work has always been about looking at the whole person, not just the hair.

Because hair loss is not always a scalp problem.

Sometimes the scalp is involved, absolutely. But many times, the hair and scalp are reflecting something happening internally. That could include nutrient deficiencies, inflammation, hormone shifts, stress, immune patterns, blood sugar imbalance, thyroid concerns, digestive issues, or poor absorption.

This is one of the reasons I am continuing to study and expand my education in gut health.

I want to be able to support my hair and scalp clients on a deeper level. Not with guessing. Not with trendy protocols. Not with “take this random probiotic and hope for the best.” We are not throwing spaghetti at the wall here, even if the gut conversation does technically involve digestion.

My goal is to help connect the dots.

What is happening in the gut? What is happening with nutrient absorption? What is happening with inflammation? What is happening with the scalp? And how might all of this be connected to the hair concern we are seeing?

This is also why I am so excited to now offer BiomeFX microbiome testing from Microbiome Labs.

What Is BiomeFX Microbiome Testing?

BiomeFX is an at-home stool test that gives us a deeper look at the gut microbiome. Microbiome Labs describes the BiomeFX Stool Kit as an at-home test designed to give practitioners and patients precision gut health insights.

One of the things that makes BiomeFX so exciting is that it uses whole genome sequencing. BiomeFX describes this as advanced whole-genome sequencing, also known as deep shotgun metagenomics, which looks at stool DNA to provide a more detailed view of the gut microbiome.

In simple terms, this means the test is looking more deeply at the microbial DNA in the sample.

Instead of only giving a very limited snapshot, whole genome sequencing can help provide information about the overall composition and potential function of the gut microbiome. According to Rupa Health’s lab overview, BiomeFX uses whole-genome sequencing technology to give insight into gut microbiome composition and potential function, including areas related to digestion, nutrient metabolism, immune function, and overall gut wellness.

That information can help us better understand what may be going on in the gut and how to create more personalized support.

Why Testing Can Be So Helpful

One of the biggest frustrations with gut health is that symptoms do not always tell the whole story.

Two people can have bloating for completely different reasons.

Two people can have constipation for completely different reasons.

Two people can have hair shedding with completely different underlying patterns.

This is why testing can be helpful. It gives us more information so we are not relying only on symptoms or guessing.

BiomeFX can help provide insight into microbial diversity, gut patterns, potential imbalances, and functional areas that may need support. It does not replace medical care, and it is not used to diagnose or treat disease, but it can be a valuable wellness tool when we are looking at the bigger picture.

Especially for clients who feel like they have tried “all the things” and still do not have answers.

And let’s be honest, “all the things” can get expensive, frustrating, and emotionally exhausting.

Targeted Gut Support Matters

I am also now carrying professional-grade supplements that are specific to different areas of gut health.

This is important because gut support should not be one-size-fits-all.

Not everyone needs the same probiotic. Not everyone needs the same digestive support. Not everyone needs the same gut-lining support. Not everyone needs the same plan.

Some people may need support for microbial diversity. Some may need help with digestion. Some may need support for the gut lining. Some may need help with motility, inflammation, or immune balance.

This is why I love being able to pair education, testing when appropriate, and targeted support.

Because the goal is not to collect supplements like baseball cards. The goal is to use the right tools for the right person at the right time.

Why This Matters for Hair and Scalp Clients

If you are dealing with hair loss, shedding, scalp irritation, itching, flaking, tenderness, inflammation, or changes in hair growth, it is easy to focus only on what is happening externally.

And yes, what we put on the scalp matters.

But what is happening internally matters too.

The gut may influence nutrient absorption, inflammation, immune regulation, and the overall environment your hair follicles are living in. If that internal environment is stressed, depleted, inflamed, or imbalanced, the hair and scalp may be affected.

This is why I am so passionate about taking a root-cause approach.

We are not just asking, “What shampoo are you using?”

We are also asking:

What are you absorbing? How is your digestion? How is your stress? What does your nutrition look like? Are there signs of inflammation?Could the gut be part of the picture?

Because when it comes to hair and scalp health, we have to look at the whole person.

The scalp is not floating in outer space doing its own little thing. It is attached to the rest of you. Shocking, I know.

The Bottom Line

Gut health is not just a trend. It is a foundational part of whole-body wellness.

A balanced gut can support digestion, nutrient absorption, immune function, inflammation regulation, skin health, and overall wellness. And because healthy hair growth depends on the health of the whole body, the gut deserves a seat at the table when we are looking at hair and scalp concerns.

This month, I will be talking more about the gut microbiome, why it matters, how it connects to hair and scalp health, and how testing can help us personalize support.

I am so excited to bring BiomeFX microbiome testing and more targeted gut health support into my practice because this allows me to help my clients look deeper.

If you have been dealing with ongoing hair loss, scalp issues, digestive symptoms, inflammation, or you simply feel like something is “off,” it may be time to look at the gut.

Your hair may be trying to tell us something.

And the gut may be one of the missing pieces.
